What Are Stormwater Control Measures?
Need help with Stormwater Control Measures in your community? We can provide compliance inspections, construct new ponds, and repair existing ponds.
How does rainwater runoff affect your property and the environment around it? Water from a lot of rainfall could overwhelm local drainage systems, create erosion, and pollute the water in ponds, and lakes. That’s where stormwater control measures can manage the water runoff and filter out pollutants, and unwanted sediment. By implementing tailored store control measures they help manage rainwater runoff efficiently, protecting your property while safeguarding the environment.
Whether you’re a developer, water resource manager, or property owner, understanding stormwater control measures are important to maintaining sustainable landscapes. We help you understand what stormwater control measures are, viable options and solutions, and how Pond Lake Management can help you with stormwater management in Central North Carolina, including Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem.

What Are Stormwater Control Measures?
Stormwater control measures (SCMs) are systems or techniques designed to manage rainwater runoff. Their primary goals include reducing the speed of runoff, filtering pollutants, and promoting groundwater recharge. These approaches minimize flooding while helping to maintain the local ecosystems.
Many towns and cities require property owners, particularly commercial and residential developers, to implement SCMs to comply with environmental regulations. Beyond local code compliance, these measures are an investment in your pond’s sustainability and long term health.
Common Stormwater Control Solutions for Your Property
When considering SCM for your stormwater retention pond or property, consider the size of your pond, the amount of water flowing into, and out of the pond.
1. Stormwater Retention Ponds
Stormwater retention ponds, or wet ponds, are one of the most widely used SCMs. These ponds are designed to hold stormwater, giving sediments and pollutants time to settle while slowly releasing the water into drainage systems downstream.
Here’s why retention ponds are popular:
Reduces flooding by collecting and controlling runoff volume.
Improves water quality by filtering pollutants.
Minimizes erosion by helping to control the flow of water.
Enhances the landscape by providing a scenic water feature.
2. Permeable Pavements
Traditional pavements block water absorption, but permeable pavement systems allow rainwater to seep through the surface and into the water table below. This slows down runoff and limits erosion. Additional benefits of permeable pavements include:
Reducing runoff on parking lots and driveways.
Less wear, and tear compared to traditional asphalt.
Easy integration into existing property landscapes.
3. Algae Management
Chemical/dye-based solutions are a great way to manage submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), floating weeds, emergent plants and algae.
In addition to algaecides for symptoms, we recommend bacterial treatment to address the most common problems in ponds – overabundant nutrients. The bacteria breaks down the excess nitrogen in the water, helping to minimize algae blooms. We also use aerators to add oxygen to the water, providing multiple benefits.
While fish and other organisms love the extra oxygen, aerators can help keep the water temperatures consistent throughout the pond (which helps prevent algae growth), as well as aids in the breakdown of muck that sits on the bottom of the pond.
4. Bioswales
Bioswales are sloped, drainage systems with planted vegetation that guide stormwater run off along a pathway, filtering pollutants as it flows. They are perfect solution for urban and suburban properties:
Their linear design of a Bioswale fits well along roadways or parking lots..
Planted landscaping slows water flow, and promotes absorption.
5. Green Roofs
For high-rise residential or commercial buildings, green roofs are a solution growing in popularity. A garden installed on a building’s roof can slow water runoff, insulates the building from the cold in the winter, and heat in the summer, and extends the lifespan of the roof.
6. Bio-Cells
Bioretention cells, also known as bio cells, are shallow stormwater basins that use soils, and vegetation to capture and treat runoff. The size of the bio-cell can vary but are usually larger than a rain garden and contain a sub-drain to move rain water once it has been filtered. The larger the bioretention cell, the larger the scope of vegetation that can be used with the bio-cell including some tree species, and large shrubs.
Bioretention cells utilize the soil to remove contaminates in runoff water. The soil media is generated by a mixture of sand, compost, and existing soil. The soil provides favorable growing conditions for vegetation and also allows runoff to filter at a quicker rate than standard soil mixes.
With a sub-drain the bioretention cell can handle larger quantities of runoff water at an even faster rate. The downside of a sub drain is less water absorption into the ground but the runoff leaving the bioretention cell is cleaner than it would have been without Bio-cell in place.
7. Rain Gardens
Rain gardens are shallow, planted depressions on your property that capture runoff from roofs or pavements. They’re a great SCM tool for residential and small commercial properties and offer a couple of great benefits:
Rain Gardens can enhance curb appeal with carefully curated native plants.
They help rainwater soak naturally into the ground, and water table.

More local municipalities are introducing stricter regulations to combat these issues. Proactive properties that invest in sustainable systems now will not only minimize their ecological footprint but potentially boost property values and help improve the value to the community.
Water resource management is no longer optional—it’s a requirement.
