Stormwater Retention Ponds Are Serious Business
A stormwater retention pond – also known as a “stormwater basin” – is constructed to replicate normal water runoff. When rain falls on a surface that doesn’t allow water to soak into the ground, it flows into your retention pond or “drainage pond” via a network of drainage pipes. Unlike detention ponds, which temporarily hold water before releasing it downstream, retention ponds are designed to hold a permanent pool of water. This standing water helps to settle out pollutants and provides a habitat for aquatic plants, and wildlife.
The pond also features a system of inlets and outlets that manage the flow of water. The inlet allows stormwater to enter the pond, where all of the bad stuff – sediments and pollutants – settle to the bottom. The drainage pipe, typically set higher than the base of the pond, allows water to slowly flow downstream, controlling the potential flooding, and erosion risk. Pond Lake Management recommends you use a trash bar guard on your drain outlets to prevent trash, and debris from clogging your drain pipes.
The purpose of a retention pond is to allow plants and other organisms within the pond to break down pollutants, improving the water quality before it is released. Dirt and plant debris will settle to the bottom of the pond over time. Install an aeration or fountain system to help circulate the pond oxygenating the water, and improve the health of your pond.
